Prerequisites: Punctual knowledge of applied thermodynamics (laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamic processes, cycles, fluids), heat transfer (conduction, convection and thermal radiation, heat exchangers) and energy science.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge: -Knowledge of scientific, technical, economic and standards bases for the exploitation of renewable energy sources (RES) in the different adequate applications . -Understanding of the basic elements for the design of plants from renewable energy sources. -Critical awareness of the multidisciplinary context for those working in the design and analysis of renewable energy plants.
Skills: ability to address a basic design for all plants from renewable energy sources, which include solar thermal systems, solar photovoltaic systems, wind systems, geothermal plants and ligno-cellulosic biomass plants. For all these types of plants, an energy production analysis is exemplified and a sizing of the plant is obtained. Students are also given the opportunity to carry out a project on one type of RES system addressed in class.
Examination methods: The exam consists of two written tests, a numerical exercise lasting 30-60 minutes and a theory test with open questions.
Students must bring the laboratory report at the exam.
For those wishing to carry out the optional project, the project report must also be delivered at the exam date.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation of the level of learning, skills of applying information in numerical exercises, ability to process laboratory data and to draw up a report, ability to explain the concepts and procedures studied in the course, ability to develop a project (optional).
Course unit contents: General information on primary energy sources. National and world energy statistics. Sustainability. Anthropogenic greenhouse.
Potential of renewable sources, technical and economic problems for the exploitation of renewable energy sources.
European and national legislation on the exploitation of renewable sources.
The solar radiation: theory, meaurements, modelling.
Technologies for solar thermal: solar collectors and sizing of plants.
Basics of solar power and solar cooling.
Solar photovoltaics: theory, components, energy generation.
Wind energy: availability, exploitation, technology and energy production.
Geothermal source at high temperature: theory and plants.
Geothermal source at neutral temperature (GCHP): theory, technologies, borehole heat exchangers.
Energy from ligno-cellulosic biomass: technologies and applications.
Hydropower in small plants.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: -Lectures.
-Numerical exercises.
-Application of standards.
-Laboratory of solar energy conversion: measurements of solar radiation, solar collector performance, PV module performance.
-Project on a specific technology (optional)
