Prerequisites: Basic Mathematic course and Basic Physic course.
Target skills and knowledge: Basic knowledge on gasdynamic feature necessary to understand and model solid rocket system.
Knowledge of basic physic principle of chemical rockets.
Capability of performing a preliminary design of a chemical rocket.
Examination methods: The exam is divided into two parts, a written section and an oral section.
The written section is composed of three tests. The first test will be on fundamenatl issues whcih must be understood in order to pass the exam. The second test is on generalized gasdynamics. The third part is on rocket design. The oral section is divided into two parts. The first part is focused on the review of the written section. The second part concerns the remaining of the program which has not been previously discussed.
Assessment criteria: The exam is focused on verifying the capability of the student of using its knowledge in understanding physical problem and in setting up a preliminary design of a propulsion system.
Teh student will have available books and notes helping in in facing the physical problem presented.
Course unit contents: General introduction about rockets, rocket performance parameters, TSIOLKOVSKY’s equation and its implications, general equation of a vehicle propelled by a rocket system, generalized one-dimensional gasdynamics, one-dimensional isoentropic flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle, Fanno’s flow, Rayleight’s flow, introduction to gas behavior in high temperature conditions, equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions, fundamentals of thermochemistry, real nozzle behavior. Solid Rockets: general overview of solid rockets, general equations, regression rate low and parameters of influence, propellants, ignition. Liquid Rockets: general overview of liquid rockets, general equations, injection, pressurization systems.
