Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course includes knowledge of Thermodynamics and Fundamentals of Process Engineering that can be acquired in the homonymous courses of the degree course in Chemical Engineering and Materials. In addition, an adequate knowledge of the characteristics of steels and cast irons that can be acquired in the course of Metallic Materials Technology of the Master's Degree in Materials Engineering is required. There are no compulsory prerequisites
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the following skills and knowledge

To know the thermodynamic bases for the understanding of both reductive and oxidative steel processes;
Be able to evaluate the influence of operational parameters on the production process and on product quality
Being able to describe the steel production process with appropriate technical terminology
Know how to perform the solidification process of a metal product.
Examination methods: Written exam with multiple choice questions in which the knowledge and skills acquired in the various topics covered in the course are assessed both from a theoretical point of view and from a computational point of view with analytical exercises.
An integral part of the evaluation will be the reports made individually by the student on the simulations of the production processes

Continuous Casting: overview and controls of microstructure

Foundry: Overview and processes for molding
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The activities include hours of lectures where the various topics of the course are dealt with on computer support (powerpoint slides). Furthermore, simulations of the production facilities are foreseen through the use of software available on Internet. Finally, we will use explicative videos of the production plants and the activities that take place there
