Syllabus
Prerequisites: The prerequisites are included in the admission requirements for the master's degree course.
Target skills and knowledge: Learn methods and techniques for quality management and assurance of manufacturing processes and of systems for the verification of geometrical product specifications. Understand benefits and costs of quality control activities. Appropriately apply decision rules for proving conformance or non-conformance. Understand innovation trends and challenges related to the advanced geometrical characterisation of surface, form and dimensions. Enable proper management of measuring systems for quality control and monitoring of industrial production systems. Enable effective management of customer-supplier relations in international contexts, with reference to both supply of components and supply of machine tools and measuring systems.
Examination methods: Written exam, including open questions and exercises. The final mark is calculated as the average of the results obtained in the single parts of the exam.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation is based on the understanding of course contents, the comprehension of concepts and methods, and capability of applying them autonomously and appropriately.
Course unit contents: Quality as a key success factor for companies, and role of metrology in Industry 4.0.
Fundamentals of quality management systems; ISO 9000 standards; benefits and costs of quality control activities.
Basics of Statistical Process Control (SPC); control charts; process capabilities.
Dimensional measuring instruments: from traditional systems to advanced innovations.
Fundamentals of standardization and geometrical product specifications.
Decision rules for proving conformance or non-conformance.
Measurement traceability and uncertainty.
Coordinate metrology.
Innovative 3D measuring systems, non-contact scanning metrology, computed tomography, Reverse Engineering.
Surface metrology.
Form metrology.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, industrial case studies, exercises and laboratory experiences.
