Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Mechanical Plants
Target skills and knowledge: The main objective is to provide the basic knowledge regarding the design, balancing and management of flexible and ergonomic assembly system in an Assembly To Order manufacturing environment.
Examination methods: Written final exam subdivided in 3 parts: the first will be a numerical exercise and the others two theoretical questions.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will consider the level of knowledge and competence gathered by the students on assembly system design (by a numerical approach) and on times and method analysis, ergonomics assessment, material management and part feeding (by a theoretical point of view). The theoretical part weights equally to the numerical part.
Course unit contents: 1) Definition of Assembly System and basic notions.
2) Integrated design procedure of an assembly system: principal phases, objectives, tools. The cycle time definition.
3) Group Assembly. Product families identification. Product Flow Analysis technique, The King method, Clustering techniques and Dendograms construction.
4) Assembly cycle definition and precedence diagrams building. Combined precedence diagram. Assembly systems layout and cycle time/make span computation.
5) Layout configuration of assembly work-stations. Automation levels and automated vs manual systems.
6) Task times analysis: crono-techniques, MTM and MOST, the Work Sampling.
7) Ergonomics assessment techniques and international standards: OWAS, OCRA and NIOSH, Snook and Ciriello. Ergonomics design of the Work Place and Micro-layout design ergo-guidelines.
8) Assembly line balancing problems. The Single-model assembly line balancing problems, heuristics SALBP-1 and SALBP-2, Kottas-Lau procedure, linear programming balancing techniques.
9) Multi-models and Mixed-models assembly systems and balancing problems. Virtual Average Model construction.
10) Multi-turns rotating table assembly systems and balancing procedure.
11) Inbound Logistics and Lot Sizing, the SMED approach.
12) Demand variability and safety stocks in ATO environments. The Consignment Stock.
13) Part Feeding Problem and supermarket. Kanban number computation.
14)Industrial cases and seminars.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons followed by numerical exercises guided by the teacher. A learning game will be start from the second month and students will work in teams in order to facilitate the learning of the theoretical methods and the application on real cases. Two seminars by company managers on real industrial cases.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Papers and exercizes will be provided by the professor by Moodle. The books are suggested but not mandatory.
