Target skills and knowledge: The course allows you to acquire an ability to understand the main business processes that concern: the relationship with the market and customers, the development of new products and services, production processes, the management of product and service quality, personnel management.
The principles of organization and their application to different dimensional contexts of the company are also acquired.
The effects of corporate strategies on the operating and economic-financial performances of the company are also analyzed.
Knowledge on the subject of financial statements is acquired, that is, the economic and financial dimensions of the company, starting from the criteria for the formation of the economic-financial results to be able to assess the results themselves and the comparison of results in various industrial sectors.
Concepts of cost analysis and management control are also acquired.
The course allows you to understand the fundamental criteria of analysis of investments of technical and industrial nature.
Examination methods: The verification of the expected knowledge and skills is carried out with a written exam.
The written exam is based on all modules of the course:
Operational areas and organization, income statement and balance sheet, cost analysis, investment analysis.
The written exam consists of:
Problems/exercises that require to calculate a numeric result on: Income statement and balance sheet, Cost analysis, Investment analysis.
Questions on business areas and organization of a company.
Questions on new technologies and innovation.
Assessment criteria: The final grade is based on the written exam.
The evaluation criteria with which the verification of knowledge and expected skills will be carried out will be:

The operational areas and the organization of companies

The creation of business value. Activities and operational processes related to: Marketing, Research and Development, Operations, Supply Chain Management, Total Quality Management, Human Resource Management.
The objectives of the company. Strategic analysis models. Business models. Formulation of a business strategy.
Historical evolution of management principles. Principles of organization. Design variables and organizational analysis.

Income statement and balance sheet
Performance measurement. Operational performance. Economic and financial performance. Models for performance measurement.
The formation of the financial statements. The income statement. The balance sheet. Balance sheet analysis and main economic and financial indicators.

Cost analysis and management control
Fixed costs and variable costs. Break-even point. Sensitivity analysis. Contribution margin. Learning curve and experience curve. Economies of scale and scope. Management control principles. Evolution of management control.

Investment analysis
Principles of financial mathematics. Interest rate. Present value and future value. Cash profiles and discount cash flow.
Basis for comparing investment alternatives. Evaluation criteria for projects and related investments. Net present value (NPV). Internal Rate of Return (IRR). Duration of the Payback. Cash profile of a project.

New technologies and innovation
The types of innovation, the sources of innovation, the structures and the organizational processes for innovation. Information and communication technologies applied to production processes and business processes. Industry 4.0: a new production paradigm.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is characterized by a high level of interactivity in which the teacher stimulates the students and the discussion in the classroom on all the contents and themes addressed.
During the course, cases of global companies and cases of Italian SMEs belonging to different sectors are analyzed and discussed.
