Prerequisites: During lectures elementary circuits will be analysed from the point of view of the Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC). Even though a thorough discussion will be provided, it will be assumed the capability of understanding the behaviour of elementary electronic circuits such as an amplifier circuit based on operational amplifiers.
Target skills and knowledge: CE marking is mandatory over the European Union (EU). Electrical appliances shall satisfy technical requirements variously described in EU directives and harmonized recommendations. In order to verify compliance with the recommendations, devices are usually specifically tested is such a way that emitted disturbances are proven to be lower than reasonably small limits, while the devices still work under the stress of rather large external disturbances. Electrical security shall be satisfied too.
The knowledge of the test suite adopted for CE marking is a critical aspect during the design of a device being sold in the EU market.
For these reasons the course aims to provide concepts and basic knowledge enabling a doctor engineer to fulfil the EU recommendations possibly at an early design stage.
Such knowledge is obtained via:
1. presentation of the main laboratory EMC tests performed on devices;
2. discussion of the design aspects arising from the laboratory tests being performed (e.g. with respect to emission reduction or hardening of the circuits to external disturbances);
3. presentation of case-studies best suited in a number of practical design contexts (e.g. common mode effects, transformers behaviour, shielding methods);
4. laboratory experiences.
Examination methods: Written examination, with additional oral examination.
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on understanding of the presented topics, as well as the ability to critically discuss and apply the tought concepts.
Course unit contents: 1. EU international recommendations.
2. Instrumentation for EMC tests.
3. Fundamental EMC laboratory tests, both emissions and immunity tests conducted and radiated.
4. Selected design techniques: crosstalk, common mode currents, shielding, grounding, elements of signal integrity.
5. Electrical security.
6. Laboratory exercises.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: - lectures
- guided laboratory exercises
- Howeworks
Additional notes about suggested reading: course textbook (in italian) or alternative english textbooks.
