Syllabus
Prerequisites: Applied thermodynamics

Target skills and knowledge: Students will be able to calculate the heating and cooling capacity of a HVAC and how to estimate in a simplified way the energy demand for heating a building.
Students will not be able to design HVAC systems, but they will understand teh complexity of the design work, having an overall view of the problem. The basic knowledge of HVAC is related to both civil and industrial plants.
Examination methods: Students have to present a report, determining for their house: the heating capacity, the cooling capacity, the consumption for heating and domestic hot water of the building, sizing of a radiant system.
The exam is written (duration 1 hour and 40 minutes). There are 5 questions:
- 2 questions with long answers (8 x 2 =) 16 points
- 3 questions with short answers (3 x 3 =) 9 points
- report: 5 points
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated based on the calculations report. Five open questions will be asked.
The student will be evaluated based on the ability to summarize the objects.
Course unit contents: Heating capacity of a system (steady state conditions). Simplified method for determining the consumption of a heating system. Simplified method for sizing the cooling capacity of a HVAC. Different HVAC systems for civil and industrial buildings. Ventilation, air handling units, and sizing air ducts. Terminal units for heating/cooling and hydronics. Heating/cooling generation systems, thermal plants. Control of HVAC systems.

Theory and examples of applications. Report with calculations to be presented at the exam.
