Syllabus
Prerequisites: No specific prerequisites.
Target skills and knowledge: a) the basic concepts necessary for a correct methodological approach to the study of transport systems;
b) an introductory-level knowledge of theories and methods of transport system analysis, with specific reference to the quantitative treatment of functional aspects;
c) the ability to recognize the practical implications of such theories and methods.
Examination methods: Oral examination on the entire set of contents, that may include both questions on general issues/theoretical aspects and the request to carry out an exercise.
Assessment criteria: In-depth comprehension of the topics covered by the course, and ability to present them clearly and correctly. Ability to apply with critical judgement the theories and methodologies studied in the course.
Course unit contents: Introductory notions on transport systems.
Definitions, basic concepts and classifications.
Description of the main activities of transport systems engineering.
Fundamentals of vehicular traffic flow theory.
Applications of probability theory to the analysis of transport systems.
Fundamentals of queuing theory.
Graphs and networks; topological representation of transport networks.
Performance functions of transport network elements.
General notions and basic concepts about travel demand.
The four-step model system for travel demand analysis and forecasting.
Fundamentals of signal control of road intersections.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Traditional classroom teaching.
