Prerequisites: Roads, Railways and Airports.
Road infrastructure design (use of software for design).
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at giving the student the necessary knowledge in order to operate at private societies, contractors and authorities, engaged in planning, design, construction and management of railway and airport infrastructures, also providing the proper skills for dealing with safety issues and cost effectiveness operative problems. To this purpose, the course includes lectures, practical works, seminars and visits of sites.
Examination methods: Oral examination (after design exercises)
Assessment criteria: Oral examination and design exercises.
Course unit contents: A) Railways. The railway system in Italy and all over the world: regulations, management, traffic, vehicles, plants, signs and installations, stations. Ordinary and high-speed tracks geometry design. The railway infrastructure. Rails and platform design (with numerical applications), related to loadings and thermal stresses. Management and maintenance of the lines.
B) Special railway infrastructures. Tramways, subways, guided rails: structures and equipments.
C) Airports. The airport as a complex system and its evolution: regulations (ICAO, EASA, ENAC), management, capacity and air traffic. Flight mechanics, aircraft (construction characteristics and types). Airports location. Airport Master Plan. Physical and functional characteristics of the terminal, operational and maintenance areas (ICAO Annnex 14, EASA CS, ENAC Regulation). Pavements: ACN / PCN classification, LCN, ESWL, structural design. Hydraulic works. Markings and signs. Plants and installations. Air traffic maintenance and safety. Terminals (passenger and cargo terminal areas, operative logistic routes, baggage handling, control towers). Airport planning and risk assessment. Noise pollution.
D) Special airport infrastructures. Heliports, helipads, STOL, VTOL infrastructures, seaplane bases: regulations, structures and equipments
During the course, lectures, practical works, seminars and visits of sites (e.g. airports) will be organized.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lecturing, using blackboard, overhead projector and video projector; seminars, exercises and didactic tours.
