Prerequisites:
|
Bachelor in civil or environmental engineering |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to understand the hydraulic and constructive aspects dealing with the drainage of roads and bridge decks, and the intersections between road and hydrographic network by use of methods, tools and techniques up-to-date. At the end of the course the student will be able to manage the different aspects that concur to the design of that works and to represent the result by use of suitable technical reports and graphical tables. |
Examination methods:
|
Oral final exam on theoretical aspects and discussion of homeworks on design subjects (e.g. road and/or bridge deck darinage, bridges and culvert, temporary works) |
Assessment criteria:
|
50% theory and 50% discussion of homeworks |
Course unit contents:
|
Regulatory aspects.
Hints of hydrology (short and intense rainfall, small catchment discharge assessment).
River hydraulic fundamentals (uniform and non-uniform flow in rivers and canals, solid transport and floating debris).
Collection and removal of water from roads (storm drains, gutters and ditches; pumping stations; management of qualitative aspects).
The underpasses.
Collection and removal of water from bridge deck.
Hydraulic problems of bridges (freeboard, backwater and localized scour induced by piers and abutments in the river) and countermeasures.
Culverts and fords.
In river temporary works. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
individual study and homeworks - lessons on the blackboard and with the help of slides |
