Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics of steady open channel flow
Examination methods: discussion on the lecture topics and on the laboratory classes' reports
Course unit contents: Flow resistance in open channel flow. Steep slope flow and air entrainment. Roll waves. Effects of bed slope and curvature on the free surface flow. Gradually-varied open channel flow with increasing/decreasing discharge: lateral inflow, lateral or bottom. Two-dimensional theory of supercritical (i.e., rapid) flow: the theory of characteristics, the Rankine-Hugoniot jump condition for shock waves, shock wave reflection and interaction. Linear theory of waves. Shallow water gravity waves. Application of the method of characteristics to the dam break wave problem. Positive surge and tidal bore.
