Prerequisites: Geotechnics
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of this course is to guide the student in designing soil improvements methods. This objective is achieved through the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge in geotechnics.
Examination methods: One or two written reports (executive geotechnical project) to be delivered before oral examinations and the final oral examination.
The final oral exam (about 20-30 min) will start from the results of the previous executive project.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criterion is based on the written report, on the compliance of the project with the objectives of the course and on the final oral exam.
Course unit contents: The following topics will be discussed:
Brief review of soil properties and soil mechanics with particular care to the analysis of settlements under construction, the time evolution of settlement and the slope stability analysis for new constructions and natural slopes.
Earth works and earth constructions: embankment types, properties of conventional and unconventional materials used for embankment construction, soil compaction, cement-based stabilization of soils, monitoring during and after construction.
Embankment construction techniques on very soft soils: preloading, multi-phase constructions, use of extra-light materials, basal reinforcing with geosynthetics.
Techniques for the reduction of consolidation time: vertical drains, vacuum load, electro-kinetic consolidation, thermal pre-consolidation.
Vertical reinforcement in soft soils: stone columns, deep-mixing, jet-grouting, freezing, vibro-compaction, heavy-tamping, piles with capping, grouting.
Soil reinforcement with inclusion: soil nailing, earth-reinforced walls.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The learning will be favored by a mix of teaching methods with the aid of slide shows, videos, with exposure to the blackboard and with the support of the personal computer. Group works will be encouraged for the written report.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Besides lecture notes and handouts, an extensive review of texts for consultation will be provided.
