Target skills and knowledge: The course provides fundamental concepts for the design of shallow and deep foundations with reference to the knowledge needed to evaluate the bearing capacity and settlement,in relation to the geotechnical characteristics of soils.
Examination methods: Oral examination with the discussion of a report concerning the design of various types of foundations.
Assessment criteria: The student will have to demonstrate
1) an understanding, from a theoretical and methodological point of view, of the topics illustrated during the teaching, and the ability to explain them with correct use of language;
2) to know how to use design methods consciously and in full autonomy.
Course unit contents: General requirements of the project: standards and guidelines. Limit state design: Italian Technical Standards for Design, Eurocode EC7. Strength and compressibility parameters of soils. Shallow foundations: types, ultimate bearing capacity, inclined and eccentric loads, foundations on slopes and layered soils. Design of shallow foundations for earthquake resistance. Serviceability behavior of the soil-foundation-structure system: settlement calculation methods in clayey and sandy soils, allowable total and differential settlements, soil-foundation interaction, structural design of direct foundations. Pile foundations: types, ultimate bearing capacity with regards to vertical and horizontal loads, settlement of single piles and pile groups, structural design of piles and connecting structures. Design of deep foundations for earthquake resistance. Energy piles. Restoration work on existing foundations. Use of numerical methods in the design of shallow and deep foundations.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal Lecturing.
Discussion of cases concerning the design of various types of foundations.
