Prerequisites: Students should have attended an undergraduate course in
- Economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics)
Previous attendency of undergraduated courses in Industrial Economics and/or Game Theory would be preferred, but it is not mandatory.
Target skills and knowledge: This course requires students to assume the role of a general manager. General managers have to cope with tremendous complexity, uncertainty, and inadequate information. An important requirement of a general manager's job is the ability to think in a cross-functional and holistic manner. Creativity and innovation are critical to achieving success, and so is the ability to execute and manage day to day. The concepts and frameworks to be covered in this course refer to materials provided in the textbook adopted (“Economics of Strategy”, by Besanko, Dranove, Shanley and Shaefer) and to other lectures available on the moodle web page of the course. Complexity and uncertainty will be the guide-lines of the historical analysis too.

By the end of this course, students will:
1. Be familiar with concepts in competitive strategy.
2. Be able to assess concepts against the problems to determine their applicability.
3. Understand how to conduct an analysis of a firm’s corporate, business, and functional strategies to arrive at an understanding of its competitive (dis)advantage in the context of its broader economic and social environment.
4. Succintly and convincingly convey recommendations in the case studies to their peers and the instructor in the class.
5. Be familiar with an evolutionary and historical viewpoint of the modern company.

The historical talks will be based on topics concerning the evolution of firms and their organization from the pre-industrial era to end of the twentieth century. The textbook is F. Amatori and A. Colli (2011): Business History. Complexities and Comparisons, Routledge, in particular the following parts: Part II, III, IV and Chap. 13, 14, 16, 17 of Part V.
