Prerequisites: Basic knowledge concerning business strategy, organization, microeconomics
Target skills and knowledge: Understanding and analyzing present and future transformation of the firm's competitive scenario concerning internationalization processes, with specific attention to the activities of multinational firms and global value chain dynamics. Understanding and analyzing the determinants of FDI and the home country and host country effects of multinational firms.
Understanding and analyzing the structure and governance of GVC to outline sustainable firms’ strategies.
Acquiring knowledge on how to manage appropriate upgrading processes in GVC.
Examination methods: For attending students (Modules A and B) the final evaluation will be based on an a individual written exam based on the content presented and discussed in classroom, the readings assigned and the case studies discussed. Moreover, students in groups will develop a team work that will be evaluated and presented at the end of the course.
For not attending students: written exam (open questions) based on the readings (slides of the lectures, scientific papers and chapters of books).
Assessment criteria: Student's evaluation will be based on the competences in applying autonomously the GVC, MNEs concepts and the GVC and international business methodologies. Attending students will be also evaluated on their capability to work in group and propose solutions and analyses related to real case studies.
Course unit contents: Module A – Global Firms
• Determinants of FDI
• Effects of MNCs on the host country
• Effects of MNCs on the home country
• MNCs and economic geography
• Global value chain (GVC) and economic geography

Module B – Global Value Chains
• International business strategies: MNCs, global firms, born globals
• GVC framework – governance
• GVC and international supply chain management
• GVC, upgrading, and innovation
• GVC and upgrading: role of global buyers
• GVC, social and environmental sustainability
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Module A and B.
Teaching methodology will couple standard presentations with case study discussion, presentations given by external speakers (entrepreneurs and managers). Attending students will be involved in discussions and team working.
Students will learn through individual study, participation to discussion in classroom, team working. The online course will offer additional material to attending students
Additional notes about suggested reading: Attending students will receive papers and additional materials to deep their knowledge concerning the topics developed in classroom. For not attending students studying materials refer to books (selected chapters).
