Syllabus
Prerequisites: To achieve a successful teaching are necessary basic knowledge of animal husbandry with special emphasis on techniques of breeding and animal production, on main farming systems and on animal nutrition and feeding
Target skills and knowledge: The students will acquire knowledge on the relationships between livestock activity and problems of exploitation and protection of environmental resources. Also student will learn some methodologies to assess the environmental impact of farms. Finally, students will acquire and apply some nutritional strategies to reduce the livestock release of pollutant in the environment
Examination methods: The exam takes place in the following ways:
1) presentation of a report on a topic agreed with the teacher
2) written examination in the form of exercises
3) oral exam
There is no exams during the course
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of students preparation will be based on:
1) understanding of arguments;
2) acquisition of methodologies designed;
3) ability to apply theoretical concepts in practice;
4) ability to investigate and to present in public a technical subject.
Course unit contents: 1st credit: Sustainable farming systems. Meaning of Sustainability. Importance of livestock on quantitative and qualitative production of food for humans, on use and protection of natural resources, on protection of the health and welfare of animal and human.
2nd credit: Main technical parameters to evaluate the degree of intensification of farm systems, production efficiency, technical and structural characteristics, use of natural resources (feed, land, water).
3rd credit: Principles of animal nutrition and feeding. The energy and protein value of feed. The nutritional requirements of animals in livestock production.
4th credit: Techniques of animal husbandry. Elements of farming systems of ruminants and monogastric animals.
5th credit: Livestock husbandry in marginal areas and protection of environmental resources. The role of livestock in a perspective of integration with other sectors of human activity (tourism, agriculture activities, territory protection). Practical examples of livestock systems designed to combine the demands of environmental protection (use of forage resources, prevent disruptions of the territory) and the economic exploitation of livestock products. Alternative farming systems: cattle, sheep and pigs on pasture; Technical and economic vantage and disadvantages.
6th credit: Livestock system intensification and excretion of pollutant. Effluents characteristics Description according to livestock system and strategies of effluent management. Assessment of nutrients excretion based on simple breeding parameters. Relationship between agricultural area, cattle load and nutrient inputs amounts: Environmental impact assessment of the farms through to intensive input-output balance.
7th credit: Strategies and techniques to reduce nutrients excretions: 1) reduction of animal number and maintaining production levels, 2) manipulation of diet composition to: control volume and amount of manure produced, regulate nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals excretion.
8th credit: Strategies of manure management to reduce the risks associated with environmental release of potentially pollutant nutrients: 1) techniques of manure collection and storage; 2) technical transformation and processing of animal waste.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: According to the educational objectives, the course will involve the following activities:
1) lectures 32 hours
2) computer laboratories 16 hours
3) classroom exercises 12 hours
4) technical visits to farms 4 hours
