Syllabus
Prerequisites: Math and basic statistics.
Strongly suggested to have knowledge on cartographic reference systems.
It is a strong advantage, but is not strictly required, to be able to use spreadsheets and software for statistical analysis.
Target skills and knowledge: Participants will learn the principles behind GIS software for environmental analysis on spatial data. The focus is on the following topics:
- which models are used to represent elements (vector, raster, TIN)
- which file formats are available today and their characteristics
- how to choose a GIS software, commercial, free or open source
- find sources of spatial data available in the web and import them in a GIS projecct
- how to use a GIS software to view, query and analyse spatial data
- how to create themes, legends and visually render your work in layouts for printing or other types of representation
- how to process existing layers to obtain more informative layers
- apply models to data for decision support
- awareness of accuracy of your data
Examination methods: Final grade will be determined by the "lab project" report. An integration from the student might be requested in case there is a need to clarify the actual abilities of the student. In this case a practical test will be done at determined dates.
Assessment criteria: Correct understanding of the GIS tools used during lecture to analyse geodata.
Ability to formalize a study case using geodata, and to write a state of the art scientific report showing the results obtained.
Course unit contents: - Structure of a GIS software, practical uses, representation models for GIS , what are spatial information layers, how they are managed in a GIS
- Implementation of a project in a GIS software, setting the cartographic reference system, scale of the project, data importing and exporting
- File -based datasets and from geodatabase
- Thematizations of information layers
- Processing type: geoprocessing ( buffer , logic intersections , interpolation )
- Compute raster math, and apply operators over vector field attributes
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Theory lectures
Lab time with practical applications using an open-source GIS software.
Group work for sharing ideas via round tables, regarding the lab project which is due for evaluation.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lecture notes
Handout material
Documentation from the GIS software which will be used in class
Online tutorials
Textbooks (and optional supplementary readings)

Innovative teaching methods: Teaching and learning strategies
  • Problem based learning
