Prerequisites: The students should know a basic understanding of the scientific literature, the experimental design and associated statistical methods, and project writing.
Target skills and knowledge: The students will be trained on:
- asking questions about sustainable agriculture, with particular attention to pest and disease problems,
- reading and understanding the types of scientific literature (research paper, review paper, textbook), and how to refer to it in writing,
- formulating hypotheses, finding out the appropriate experimental method to test them, running the experiment and drawing conclusions,
- framing of the above concept in research and dissemination projects.
Examination methods: Each student will report in the class about the points above and will elaborate a research project on a specific topic to be discussed in the class.
Assessment criteria: Comparative assessment of the outputs in the class through short talks and oral questions.
Course unit contents: Define questions in sustainable agriculture and plant protection in particular.
Analyse and understand a research paper.
Analyse and understand a review paper.
Analyse and understand a textbook.
Design experiments and test hypotheses.
Draft a research project.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Theory and practice in computer room with access to the information databases and libraries.
