Previous knowledge of botany, ecology, and environmental law is recommended though not obligatory to attend the course. |
Target skills and knowledge:

At the end of the course attending students will be able to apply the regulatory framework of European Habitats and Birds Directives to planning, management, and assessment of Natura 2000 sites. |

Assessment criteria:

a) Knowledge of relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks; b) ability to apply theoretical/conceptual understandings to a given question; c) ability to structure and organise material in a time constrained situation/environment; d) ability to present ideas/opinions coherently with reference to models and frameworks as appropriate. |
Course unit contents:

Introduction. History of the Natura 2000 network. The biogeography of Natura 2000 network. Regulatory framework, objectives and implementation of the Habitats and Birds Directives: sources of interpretation, the preambles, definitions, conservation, management, appropriate assessment, protection, information and research. Relationships between the Habitats and the Birds Directives. Monitoring of the Natura 2000 network. Assessment of conservation status of species and habitat. Management planning of Natura 2000 sites. Application of Natura 2000 requirements to forest management and planning. European Union habitats distribution modelling and assessment in the field. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

The teaching includes: indoor and outdoor lectures and laboratories. The indoor lectures make use of digital presentations and videos. Moreover, several scientific and technical papers which deal with Natura 2000 and its application will be discussed. |

A good preparation of the exame can be achieved by attending the lectures and by studying the course's slides. The preparation could be integrated through the field excursion, which is recommended, and through the documents whose links are provided in the slides. |
