Prerequisites: No specific prerequisites are requested however, having attended the basic courses of Biology, Botany, Ecology and Forest Management is advisable.
Target skills and knowledge: An introduction to the study of forest stand dynamics, including the mechanisms and pathways of forest development and the role of natural and human disturbances on forest (Alpine and Mediterranean) composition and structure. A special focus will be devoted to dendroecology, i.e. the application of tree-rings analysis to ecological questions, especially to study the temporal aspects of forest dynamics.
Examination methods: Multiple choice written test and oral presentation. The presentation will be related either on selected papers or on the lab experience (according to the number of students).
Assessment criteria: Oral presentation of a scientific article or lab work: 10%
Written test with mainly close and few open questions: 85%
Class participation: 5%

Presentations will be graded for their content and the quality of preparation.
Course unit contents: Forest structure: defining the main drivers structuring a forest stand. Classifying the vertical, horizontal and chronological structure. The importance of time. CFU:1

Forest dynamics: the role of disturbances. Definition of forest disturbance and disturbance regime. Forest successions. CFU:1

Dendroecology: study forest structure and dynamics with tree rings. Basic definition, the principles of dendrochronology, the technique of crossdating. CFU:2

Application of dendroecological methods to study forest disturbances. CFU:2
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching and learning methods include lecture-based input; presentation and discussions of the reading assignments and field visits.

Presentations and analyses of the main subjects are carried out both in classrooms sessions, with the support of exercises related to theory and case studies, and with visit at selected Alpine areas, where students have the opportunity to directly observe different kinds of forests and disturbances. A major part of the course will be held at the Ecology laboratory of San Vito di Cadore, Belluno, Italy. Field, lab and practical activities are promoted to facilitate understanding and applying theory.
