Syllabus
Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at introducing the students to the geology of mountain areas. By the end of the course, the student will: comprehend the basic principles of geology; understand how mountains and rocks form; have the ability of interpreting a geological map and drawing/constructing a geological section; be able to better interpret the environment in mountain areas, taking into consideration the main geological structures, the nature and structure of the bedrock, the type of superficial deposits and the main geomorphological processes.
Examination methods: The examination consists in an oral discussion in English 1) with open questions on the topics treated during the course and 2) with practical reading and interpretation of a geological map and/or practical identification of rock samples.
Assessment criteria: The following criteria will be considered:
- the knowledge on the various topics treated during the course
- terminological pertinence to describe the topics discussed;
- the ability of linking logically different items of knowledge;
- the capacity of describing and classifying the rocks;
- the learning and ability to read and interpret a geological map.
The pro-active attitude and participation in all activities (class, laboratory and field) will be also evaluated.
Course unit contents: The course will treat the following topics:
- Earth’s interior and seismic waves
- Plate tectonics
- Minerals
- Magma formation and igneous rocks
- Sedimentary rocks
- Metamorphic rocks
- Mechanical and chemical weathering, karst morphology
- Mass wasting
- Landscapes formed by glacial erosion
- Rock deformation, geological structures: folds, faults and joints
- The formation of mountains: orogenic styles
- The geology of Alps
- Geological maps and geological sections
- Field excursion (central Alps)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Theoretical notions will be transferred by means of frontal lessons with multimedia material that will be provided beforehand to students.
Laboratories will consist of a) describing and classifying rock samples and interpreting a geological maps and drawing a geological section, and b) field excursion in central Alps.
Additional notes about suggested reading: All the teaching material used in the class and laboratories is available for download through the electronic platform MOODLE.
Along with the reference book, additional teaching material will be made available to cover specific topics of the course
