Prerequisites: To have a good knowledge of animal's farming and animal's foods obtained during the previous 3 years bachelor course.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn: the ecological, historical and cultural basis of animal husbandry and agriculture, the role of animal production in the agro-food systems, the different types of animal breeding from a product-chain point of view, the structure of breeders organizations and the more peculiar recent achievements of science and technology. Furthermore the student will learn more on pertinent literature research and on the methodology for the writing of the thesis. A case study will approach the relationships among environment, agriculture, animal production, typical products, local eno-gastronomic culture, turism and development in a specific territory.
Examination methods: The exam will be oral.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student will be based especially on his/her ability to discuss critically the topics studied during the lectures and to analyze a complex problem related to an animal production or product and to propose sustainable solutions.
Course unit contents: The program during the semester is based on:
1st credit: some seminars and lectures on the ecological and cultural bases of animal productions;
2nd credit: some seminars and lectures on the hystorical and economical trend of food production and consumption with special emphasis to food of animal origin;
3rd credit: exercises on scientific literature review on some themes of the course and evaluation of the value of the sources of information;
4th credit: participation to scientific and or technological meetings and seminars with reporting, discussion and critical conclusions;
5th and 6th credits: analysis of the critical points relating animal science and consumer health;
7th, and 8th credit: Case study on relationships between animal production, environment, culture, traditions, astronomy and turism in a given territory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Seminars and lectures by the professor and by experts on items regarding the technological development; some technical visits to innovative farms and industries.
