Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of Plant Pathology
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn in detail the biological properties of important viruses and bacteria and their mode of transmission, symptomatology and damages produced on host plants, besides diagnostic techniques and control methods of these infectious agents.
Examination methods: Written and/or oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The examination focuses on the topics covered in the lectures and lab practices. The student must demonstrate a good level of knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the course and must acquire technical and practical skills for the identification and isolation of bacterial and viral agents.
Course unit contents: 1st credit: General features of plant viruses. Virus-host plant relationships and host responses to virus infection. Symptomatology and conditioning factors.
2nd credit: Transmission and relationships between viruses and vectors. The major means of control of virus diseases.
3rd credit: Types of resistance. Mechanisms of antiviral defence. Resistance genes, resistance breaking, durable virus resistance.
4th credit: Important virus diseases in horticulture, fruit culture and cereal crops.
5th credit: Symptomatology, epidemiology and pathogenesis of bacterial diseases. Host-bacterial pathogen interactions.
6th credit: Bacterial diseases of different crops. Control strategies.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures: 32 hours
Lab practice: 16 hours

Lab practice: techniques for detection and identification of viruses; detection of some plant defence responses to viral and bacterial pathogens; procedures for the purification of viruses and determination of the degree of purity; isolation and identification of plant pathogenic bacteria and pathogenicity tests.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lecture notes and supplementary material provided during the course
Didactic material will be available at the specific link https://elearning.unipd.it/scuolaamv/
