Prerequisites: Agronomy, plant biology
Target skills and knowledge: The student acquires knowledge on the importance of the herbaceous plants as a functional element in the different ornamental areas, information on the biological and ecophysiological characteristics of herbaceous ornamental species suitable for different green areas, both private and public, small and large extensions. The student will learn to design, prepare and manage ornamental beds and borders.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation is based on the proven understanding and acquisition of the topics imparted during the lessons and the ability to choose and combine species as demonstrated with the project.
Course unit contents: Importance of herbaceous ornamental species and functions in the different green areas. Generalities on the eco-physiological aspects of herbaceous species.
The annuals, biennials, perennials, grasses, the geophytes: biology, characteristics, basis for the design.
The preparation of ornamental beds and borders: site assessment, improvement of chemical and physical parameters, cultivation and planting.
Management of flower beds: watering, fertilizing, weed control, pruning.
Study of features and the use of some species of particular interest
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching activities are based on lectures, technical visits, classroom work (discussion of the projects developed by groups of students).
Additional notes about suggested reading: The study is mainly based on the slides of the lessons provided by the professor and on lecture notes. The books listed below may be useful for consultation for the preparation of the project.
