Syllabus
Prerequisites: A basic knowledge in forest science is required. A fundamental knowledge on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) tool is also suggested
Target skills and knowledge: The student acquires abilities necessary to evaluate the forest operation logistic and competences on plannig forest road network in relation to the needs of forest operations
Examination methods: Grading of the student consists on a final oral exam about the programme of the course and on the discussion of a project independently developed by the student
Assessment criteria: The student grading is based upon the comprehension on the subject and methods presented during the course (70%) and on the acquired abilities independently applied to a final project (30%)
Course unit contents: Practical, managerial and logistical
considerations associated with forest road network in mountainous area with a multi-function perspective are presented.
The course is organized as follows:
1. Introduction (including function and environmental impacts of the forest road network, forest road network and forest operations, quality and quantity index of the forest road network)
2. Forest road design (including geometrical design, Water and forest road interaction)
3. Planning (including analysis on the extension of the forest road network, GIS to support forest road network planning)
4 Design of a forest roads (including field survey of P-line, preliminary design of a forest roads, final project documentation)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Methods on Forest road network planning are introduced. Design and building of forest roads are explained in relation to a multi-function use of the fores roads network. Traditional technics and methods of analysis and current GIS and design software are introduced and explained.
Field practical activities with traditional survey tool and current GPS and GIS and design software practices are a consistent part of the course.
The course is subdivided in:
- 50% frontal lectures
- 25% GIS and design software laboratory
- 25% field practical activities
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lectures and textbooks for the course are available on: https://elearning.unipd.it/scuolaamv/ (Moodle plattform)
The students could be received at the end of the lectures or by fixing an appointment by e-mail
