Prerequisites: For the student to follow best the lessons a preliminary/elementary knowledge of the following subjects is advisable: anatomy, physiology, microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: The main objectives of the present course in Immunology and Immunopathology of the oral cavity is the acquisition of the conceptual and scientific basis for understanding the mode of action of the immune system in health and disease, with particular emphasis on the physiopathology of the oral mucosae. Specifically, the main objectives are:
1. Acquisition of the basic knowledge concerning the fundamental biological mechanisms regulating the function of the immune system in the defense against diseases;
2. Acquisition of the basic knowledge of the pathological mechanisms of the immune system, in particular in mediating immune reactions such as hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency;
3. Systemic pathological immune reactions and their manifestations locally at mucosal sites.
Examination methods: The final exam will be a multiple choice written exam, possibly followed by an oral integration (on the basis of the errors/problems found in the written examination). The multiple choice exam will evaluate the students knowledge of all the program dealt with in the lessons.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the students capacity to differentiate and apply the knowledge acquired during the course and to use the basic principles learnt in the context of odontoiatric problems/diseases.
Course unit contents: Organization of the immune system:
1. Anatomy of the immune system: general organization of lymphoid organs (spleen, lymph nodes, Peyer Patches, appendix, bone marrow and thymus), lymphoid organs of the oral cavity (palatine tonsils, lingual and pharyngeal tonsils, local lymph nodes, lymphoid cells of the mucosae and submucosae, lymphoid tissue associated with salivary glands and mucosae associated lymphoid tissue such as GALT).
2. Cells of the immune system: leucocytes, lymphocytes, NK cells, dendritic cells. Different classes of lymphocytes: B cells, T cells and varies sub-populations of T and B cells. Antigen and Antibody: characteristics and function.
3. Biochemistry of the immune system: molecules such as Immunoglobulins, T cell receptor, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, co-stimulatory molecules, cytokines.

Physiology of the immune system with particular emphasis on the oral cavity:
1. Microbiology of the oral cavity and its ecosystem. Bacterial plaque. Immunological aspects of caries and paradontal disease. Mechanisms of activation of lymphoid cells by microorganisms within the oral cavity.
2. Innate immune responses
3. Adaptive (Specific) immune responses: Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses
4. Effector mechanisms of humoral immune responses and secretory IgA
5. General immunological aspects of infections affecting the oral cavity
6. Regulatory mechanisms of the immune system

Pathology of the immune system with particular emphasis to its local manifestations in the oral cavity:
1. Classification of hypersensitivity reactions and general principles
2. Autoimmune diseases
3. Immune deficiencies
4. Immunity and Cancer
5. Immune hematology, Blood groups
6. Transplant Immunology and HLA system
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be mainly held as formal lessons using PowerPoint presentations and possibly intenet (for visualization of histopathological cases/examples).
Additional notes about suggested reading: The professor indicates 3 books translated in Italian dealing with immunology. In addition, the slides of the entire course will be available through the E-learning Platform.
