Prerequisites: Basic knowledge and skills of general and organic chemistry. Knowledge of the fundamental chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
Target skills and knowledge: Obtain knowledge of the major metabolic pathways in different tissue and organs.
Examination methods: Written multiple choice test, essay questions and short answer
Assessment criteria: Attention will be given to the accuracy, details of the answer and appropriate language.
Course unit contents: Biological membranes: structure and function. Hemoglobin and mioglobin structure and function. Principles of Enzymology. Water and fat soluble vitamins. Carbohydrate metabolism, Lipid metabolism, protein metabolism, including the main metabolic processes and mitochondrial bioenergetics. Cellular signalling.
