Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student needs knowledge of general and organic chemistry, and elements of biology.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire knowledge of the peculiar structures of the plant cell and will be able to recognize and understand the functions of the different tissues and organs of the plant. It will acquire basic knowledge of plant evolutionary biology also according to their classification. It will acquire knowledge of the morphological characters and of the phytochemistry of the botanical families and of the main species of medicinal interest.
Examination methods: The exam will be written with open questions: 3 of plant biology and 3 of pharmaceutical botany. Each question will be assigned a maximum score of 5 and the final grade will be the sum of the individual scores.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student's preparation will be based on ascertaining the acquisition of knowledge of the peculiar structures of the plant cell, and of the functions of the different tissues and organs of the plant also in relation to the evolutionary processes. The critical ability to apply this knowledge and the phytochemical characteristics in the recognition of the botanical families and of the main species of medicinal interest will also be evaluated.
Course unit contents: Introduction to the course: general concepts, purposes.
Plant biology.
Plant neurobiology.
Origin of life. Evolution: speciation and clades. From prokaryotes to the photosynthetic eukaryotic cell. Appearance of multicellularity.
Emergence from the aquatic environment: how plants have colonized the earth, problems of adaptation to a terrestrial environment.
The cell: the basic unit of living organisms. Plant cell vs animal cell: similarities and differences. The chemistry of plants. Definition of organic compound and polymer. Primary metabolism: carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Secondary metabolism: role of secondary metabolites in plants.
The wall: structure, composition, modifications and functions.
The vacuole: biogenesis, tonoplast, vacuole sap, solid inclusions and functions.
Plastids: proplastids, etioplasts, proteinoplasts, elaioplasts, amyloplasts, chromoplasts, chloroplasts, gerontoplasts. Chlorophylls and accessory pigments.
Plant histology.
Primary and secondary meristematic tissues.
Parenchyma tissues: ground parenchyma, chlorenchyma, aerenchyma, parenchyma aquifer , reserve parenchyma, transfusion parenchyma and conduction parenchyma.
Tegumental tissues: epidermis, stomata, trichomes, rhizoderma, exoderm, endoderm and cork.
Support tissues: collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
Vascular tissues: xylem and floem.
Secretory tissues: external secretory tissues and internal secretory tissues.
Organography.
Stem, root, leaf, flower and fruit: structures and their modifications.

Pharmaceutical botany.
Taxonomy and classification. Archea and bacteria. Protists: algae. Mushrooms. Lichens. Bryophytes. Vascular plants.
Morphological and phytochemical characteristics of the botanical families and of the main species of medicinal interest.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and interactive seminar lessons. The contents of the course will be illustrated with the help of computer support. Individual study.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The presentations used in the lessons will be available to the students. It is essential, however, that this material is integrated with the lesson notes.
