Syllabus
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge needed. During lessons all material will be read in Spanish (that is, in its original version) and contextually translated. Students are allowed to choose according to their skills whether they prefer the original text or a translation into Italian (or English, this applying for foreign students).
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to transmit a deep insight about the historical and literary evolution of Spain in the XIX Century, as well as an iterpretative tool which is meant to be useful in order to approach the primary literature inserted in the bibliography. The main onjective is the acquisition of a well-established capability of authonomous analysis of the texts seen, and beyond.
Examination methods: Oral exam in Italian, or other language (Spanish or English) established with the Professor prior to the exam.
Assessment criteria: Students will be assessed mainly on the syllabus of the course (primary texts, contextualization of each in its historical and literary period), with a particoular interest towards the elaboration of intertextual connections and the capability of establishing links between the subjects given during the course.
Non-attending students (that is, students attending less than 70% of the total amount of hours) are strongly recommended NOT TO BORROW other students' notes, as their exams is specifically conceived as a different set of questions.
ALL STUDENTS please note that, unless differently indicated by the professor, all texts are to be read INTEGRALLY and never in reduced or simplified editions.
Course unit contents: The course delves into the multiple historical, cultural and literary evolutions of the Spanish XIXth Century, as recorded and expressed in poetry, theatre and novel. During classes the following subjects will be the main focus:
- La Generación del ’98 and finisecular literature: doubting existance in Miguel de Unamuno's Niebla
- 'De-humanizing' theory and practice: Ortega y Gasset and Valle-Inclán;
_ García Lorca as a poet and playwright;
_ Francoist spain as seen from within and outside;
- Literature during democracy: from the transition from nowadays. vicente Luis Mora's 'novela total'
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons, though students are welcome to intervene.
