Target skills and knowledge: The course is divided into three macro-areas: the first one is dedicated to the definition of the concept of culture into the socio-anthropological field and on the nature of its connections with the social world; the second one is focused on the concept of ‘distinction’ in classic and contemporary research; the third deals with the analysis on the historic and social evolution of consumption.

The course will provide the students with the following skills:
• to understand the main concepts of sociological analysis of culture;
• to do empirical research on a cultural phenomenon;
• to interpret the cultural differentiation in modern societies;
• to understand the patterns of transmission, conservation and of cultural change.
Examination methods: The exam is written and is based on three open questions. For the students attending the course the final evaluation will be based on the group-work presented in the class and on the written exam.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria of the skills and concepts the students will learn are:
• ability in sociological analysis
• outline the relationship society/culture
Course unit contents: The conceptual areas of sociological investigation that will be discussed in class are the following:
• Culture and social change
• Common sense as a cultural system
• Culture and economic development
• Culture and consumption

• Group discussions in class on issues related to the course
