Prerequisites: Students are required to have passed the examination of Methodology and Social research methods I
Target skills and knowledge: The course will provide an overview of qualitative research.
Students will learn how to produce and analyse qualitative data and how to communicate research results to different publics.
After completing this course, students will have a good command of qualitative research methods, especially of participant observation, focus group and visual methods.
Examination methods: The final examination is composed by a written examination on the full program.

Students who participated in the full course (research practice included) may be asked for a brief oral exam only at the exam session reserved to attending students (at the end of the course).
Assessment criteria: -Knowledge of methodological contents illustrated in the course
-Competent use of sociological categories and vocabulary
-Ability to make links between research theory and practices through critical and reflexive discussion of empirical examples

-Knowledge of contents illustated in class lectures and seminars
-engagement in the research process
Course unit contents: The course will start from a definition of qualitative research and from the defence of the reasons that justify its use. Moreover, there will be a review of the principal research methods such as participant observation, discursive interview and, especially, focus groups.
Students will be required to participate in a research process and, thanks to the cooperation with San Precario sport club,
they will do participant observation, discoursive interviews and focus groups to explore anti-racism through popular sport.
The last part of the course will be devoted to visual research and there will be seminars with experts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The Course will be structured through:
-Class lectures on qualitative and ethnographic research, in order to introduce theoretically and methodologically key concepts
-interactive lecturing with the use of multimedia materials in order to promote active discussions with/among students on research practices
-laboratory experiences, working in groups, peer feedback/assessment, writing reflexive papers in order to learn participant observation, discoursive interviews and focus groups by doing fieldwork
-public seminars on visual research (using case studies) in order to activate the sociological imagination of students in dialogue with experts and stakeholders
Additional notes about suggested reading: During all the course, moodle platform will be used in several ways (digital archiving of slides and articles; forum for students; communication with students; sharing and discussing multimedia research materials etc)
