Prerequisites: Social geography current issues
Target skills and knowledge: - To be able to identify and correlate the elements of a territorial system;
- To be able to analyze the processes of territorialisation, de-territorialisation and territoriality in the perspective of a local action;
- To be able to develop an actor's analysis;
- To be able to apply the theoretical territorial approach to a real world analysis
Examination methods: The assessment of learning will differ for attending and non-attending students.
Attending students
Having analyzed the theoretical part of the course, attending students will be divided into groups for the workshop activity, in-class discussions and presentations.
The final grade will be assessed as follows:
1) The group workshop activity is worth 25% of the grade, with all team members receiving the same evaluation. Each group will be given full responsibility for organising one in-class presentation and a discussion on the workshop experience. The presentation will be assessed according to the following criteria: process - the ability to analyse academic arguments (planning, independence, insight) 25%; content - comprehension of theoretical concepts (introduction and problem statement, argumentation, results: discussion and interpretation, conclusion, coherence and logical composition, originality, depth) 50%; form - competence in communicating intellectual ideas 25%.
2) Final exam during the examination period: oral (closed book) (75%): questions encompass all the readings assigned and include: 4 essay questions on main topics; 1 question-comment on workshop activity.
The final grade will be the average of all assessments (Points 1-2).
Non-attending students
1) Final exam during the examination period: oral (closed book): questions encompass all the assigned readings and include 5 essay questions.
Assessment criteria: -Completeness of acquired knowledge
-Appropriateness of disciplinary terminology in oral contexts.
-Competence in recognizing and correlating the elements of a territorial system;
-Competence in mastering a theoretical approach to a territorialization process and the related dynamics of territoriality, also through examples;
-Competence in applying an actor's analysis;
-Competence in mastering a practical approach to the territorial analysis: to conduct a space analysis into a real world situation.
Course unit contents: The course contains 5 major parts.
1.The territorial system
2.The territorialization process
3.Territoriality and participatory approaches
4.Actors analysis
5.A practical experience of space analysis. THIS IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING THE COURSE. Students develop in a team a territorial analysis designing questionnaries and interviews. The application area is the Polesine.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Several teaching methods and work forms are combined:
Part 1-4: lectures. Lectures will not only raise analytical issues, they will also explore how the concretisation of theories in real world experience has come about, examine its implications, and enable us to comprehend how it facilitates understanding of local development processes.
Part 5: fieldwork, working group, presentation and discussion with peers, teacher ans stakeholders; critical reflection on the chosen topic correlated with situation experienced. 21hours will be entirely devoted to the practical approach (workshop) that directly follows the lectures. These classes should not be skipped if students want to get involved in the workshop. This first-hand experience challenges students to think about what is involved in putting territorial analysis into practice, to form a critical appreciation of the studied concepts, and to generate personal responses to the course readings, lectures and discussions.
Additional notes about suggested reading: This 9 CFU course is divided into 42 hours of lectures and 21 hours of the workshop centred on the Polesine case study.
