Syllabus
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites. As recommended background, interest in History of Architecture and general knowledge of history of the Renaissance are suggested.
Target skills and knowledge: The Course aims at providing students with instruments to know structure and to understand projects and trasformations of urban spaces and buildings, using a wide range of sources.
The Course focuses on history of architecture and urban transformations, through specific episodes which will be widely detailed, comparing case-studies and analyzing single architects during Renaissance age.
Through some of the most celebrated examples of the Renaissance architecture, the course will examine problems of the architectural spaces, technology and forms.
Examination methods: Students will be required to take a midterm self-assessment test (to verify their ability to contextualise and compare works).

The final exam will be oral, with discussion of the issues addressed during lessons and visits. A portfolio/sketchbook can be presented with the analysis of the works discussed in class and possible additions.
Students should demonstrate the skill to analyze works, placing it in the historical and urban context of reference; to know the lives of the architects and of the clients, recognizing where possible the motivations and the underlying causes of the architectural project or the transformation of some cities. In addition to the knowledge of the topics the ability to describe and analyze the works also by means of sketches, photos and more is required.
Assessment criteria: Throughout the final oral exam, the students will have to demonstrate of being capable to analyse and communicate an architectural work by allocating it in the relevant historical and urban context; of being capable to outline the space and time references and to work out the biographical ones of the single artists and patrons, of having a basic knowledge of the reading list of the course, as well as a detailed knowledge of the topics illustrated during the lectures.
Other than the knowledge of the topics as shown in the program, the capability of describing and analysing works, also by means of sketches, photos, and the like, is required.
Course unit contents: As a first step, lectures will concern method and language issues regarding “history of architecture”. The second step will be characterized by a more applicative approach, and will concern the analysis of key episodes and architects who played a fundamental role in Reinassance "new architecture".
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists in classroom lectures and site visits aimed to, owing to the direct analysis of the works, ameliorate the student's historical and critical capacities.
The idea is to approach the matter more in a practical rather than abstract way.
