Prerequisites: No prior knowledge is required.
Target skills and knowledge: The aims of the course are the following:
(1) the knowledge of the development, the characteristics, the authors, the texts and the main doctrines of the Arabic philosophical tradition in medieval Islam (VIII-XIII cent.);
(2)the knowledge of the development, the characteristics, the authors, the texts and the main doctrines of the Islamic Theology from the beginning to the XIII cent.;
(3) the analysys and the understanding of some texts of the Arabic theological and philosophical tradition in Italian translation.
Examination methods: The exam consists of an interview on several topics addressed during the lessons. The individual interview will last about 30 (thirty) minutes. The questions will verify the knowledge of the two Arabic-Islamic traditions addressed during the course: the theological and the philosophical one.
Assessment criteria: The mark will express the level of achievement of the aims (see the section "Knowledge and skills to be acquired"). The following abilities will be assessed: completeness of knowledge, accuracy of conceptual analysis, correct terminology and construction of a relevant and clear personal critical discourse.
Course unit contents: The lessons will be divided according to the following teaching units:

42 hours
(1) The philosophy of Late Antiquity and the problem of the 'traslatio studiorum' in Medieval Islam
(2) The movement of translation during the 'Abbasid caliphate (IX-XI sec.).
(3) Al-Kindī's philosophy of (c. 800-870).
(4) The Baghdad Aristotelians (X sec.).
(5) Al-Fārābī's thought (c. 870-950).
(6) Avicenna (c. 980-1037).
(7) Al-Ġazālī (1058-1111).
(8) The Andalusian tradition and Ibn Tufayl (1105-1185).
(9) Averroes (1126-1198).
(10) The transmission of Arabic philosophy from Muslim Spain to the Universities of the thirteenth century.

21 hours
(1) Genesis and development of the kalām: the formative period in Medina, the encounter with Christian theology, the conflict mu'tazilism-traditionalism, the triumph of a'arism, the ġazalian eclecticism and the way of the moderns, the fossil conservatism.
(2) Kalam in Islamic organization of knowledge.
(3) Kalām: structure and contents of the treatises.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The predominant teaching method will be lectures which will try to engage students and stimulate discussion. The lessons include the reading and the analysis of some significant pages by the above-mentioned authors. For the last 21 hours on the kalām, each student will have a brief essay to present to the class. Attendance is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The bibliographical references of the exam, texts and powerpoints presented in class will be available on the course's moodle page. Non-attending students have to contact the professor to agree on the exam program.
