Prerequisites: None. A general knowledge of modern and contemporary history is advised but not compulsory.
Target skills and knowledge: By the end of the course the students will have the knowledge and analytical tools to master the most relevant events and issues that have shaped the political, economic, and social history of the United States from the establishment of the European colonies in North America, starting with the second half of the Sixteenth century, to the presidency of Donald J. Trump. The will have also acquired the skills and the elements to elaborate critical, autonomous, and personal assessments of such issues.
Examination methods: Oral exam (for students unable to attend classes and exchange students on the Erasmus program and the like, too) on the topics addressed during classes and on the contents of the readings listed in the "textbooks" section of the syllabus. Each oral exam will be rigorously individual. Its length will be inversely proportional to the student's knowledge. Students are advised not to prepare the exam by learning names and dates by heart.
Assessment criteria: The oral exam will aim at assessing a) knowledge and understanding of the historical developments, b) knowledge and understanding of the most important phenomena and c) knowledge and understanding of the most relevant events. The final grade will result from the combination of the assessment of each of the three parts. The assessment criteria will also include the clarity in expressing one's ideas and arguments.
Course unit contents: ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF U.S. HISTORY FROM THE EUROPEAN COLONIZATION TO THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION. The purpose of the classes is to offer a preliminary survey of U.S. history from the establishment of European colonies in North America, starting with the second half of the sixteenth century, to the presidency of Donald J. Trump, addressing selectively the main political, economic, and social events in both the domestic and international arena. The leitmotif of such a reconstruction will be the analysis of the efforts on the part of the United States, even before its establishment as a sovereign country, to shape the world as a reflection of an American model and consequently to claim a role of its own as an "indispensable nation" to the mankind. The issues discussed in classes will include, but will not be confined to, the Spanish, English, French, Dutch, and Swedish settlements in North America, the introduction of slavery, the French-Indian War, the War of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, the federal institutions, the anti-Federalists, the Bill of Rights, the first party system, neutral countries' rights and the War of 1812, the Monroe doctrine, the 1824 presidential elections and the second party system, the "American System", the Jacksonian democracy, the wars against Native Americans, the continental expansion, abolitionism and the free soil movement, the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln's emancipation proclamation and the end of slavery, the Reconstruction and the compromise of 1877, the economic growth after the civil war, the rise of Big Business, the Gilded Age, racial segregation, populism, the frontier thesis, mass immigration, socialism and the labor movement, the social question, progressivism, the late nineteenth-century colonialism, the early-twentieth-century informal imperialism (the open door policy, the Roosevelt corollary, the dollar diplomacy), the entry into World War I, the alleged isolationism in the interwar years, "back to normalcy", nativism and the end of mass immigration, the birth and development of consumer society, the great depression, the New Deal, the Good Neighbor policy, from neutrality to the participation in World War II, the home front during World War II, the origins of the Cold War, the Truman Doctrine and the Korean War, the roll back, McCarthyism, the dynamic conservatism of the 1950s, the Great Society, exceptions to immigration restriction, the Vietnam War, the social movements of the 1960s (students, African Americans, women, Hispanics, Native Americans, gays), racial integration, détente, deindustrialization, the Watergate scandal, Jimmy Carter and the centrality of human rights, the second Cold War and the Reagan Doctrine, stagflation and Reaganomics, the coming of a multiethnic and multiracial society, the end of the Cold War, the late twentieth-century unipolar moment, the New World Order, the New Democrats, Bill Clinton and welfare, globalization, the Democratic Enlargement, the new economy, the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and the "war on terror", the great recession, the presidency of Barack Obama, post-racial politics and the persistence of race inequality, the elections of 2016, neo-populism and neo-isolationism, the first three years of the Trump administration.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Learning activities: class attendance, discussion during classes, individual study.
Teaching methods: frontal teaching with the support of audio-visual materials.
Students will be encouraged to ask questions during classes.
