Syllabus
Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended to attend and complete the course of Sociology, at the first year of Communication, before attending the course of Interpersonal Communication.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at providing critical tools to understand face to face and mediated communication and a basic expertise in the realization of qualitative sociological research.
At the end of the class, students are expected to know the basic rules for conducting an interview; knowing to apply the methods of conversation analysis, content analysis and ethnography; being able to recognise the frames, the rituals and the role attributions underlying face to face communication; having aquired an introductive knowledge about mass media communication and computer mediated communication.
Examination methods: Written examination. For the students attending to the classes, there will be an intermediate test.
Assessment criteria: The final evalutation will be based on the capacity of critical understanding of sociological concepts and theories and on the student's ability to translate these in a research question. In order to evaluate students' critical and discoursive skills I will conduct written examinations, with open questions.
Course unit contents: Lessons will respect the following order:
- introduction to communication studies;
- intepersonal communication;
- non-verbal communication;
- conversation analysis;
- Social Interaction Theories;
- framing and the definition of situation;
- collective identities;
- fashion, body, subcultures;
- an introduction to methodology;
- conducting a qualitative interview;
- conducting an ethnography.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: LECTURES AND CLASS-WORKSHOPS.
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the lessons, I will provide students with educational material substituting the manual of sociology of the communication.
