Syllabus
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge is required.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at providing students basic knowledge on the human mind functioning especially in relation to cognitive processes (perception, attention, memory, language, thinking and reasoning, decision-making), emotional processes, and communication.
Upon completion of this course, students will possess adequate knowledge of the above topics and will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to different communication fields.
The lectures will be mainly frontal, but the teaching style will be participatory, by stimulating students to discuss the course topics in small groups. Besides the acquisition of the discipline contents, the course is aimed at providing the acquisition of specific soft skills, such as communication skills and analysis ability.
Examination methods: The assessment of learning will occur through the final exam, which ascertains the acquisition of the expected knowledge and abilities. Questions will deal with the theoretical models and the psychological mechanisms characterizing the way human beings acquire, process, store, and use information. The final exam will consist in a written test including 31 multiple-choice questions with 4 possible answers. The written test will last 1 hour and does not differentiate between attendant and non-attendant students. No oral integration is contemplated.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation criteria for assessing the expected knowledge and competence are the following:
1) the completeness of the acquired knowledge;
2) a firm grasp of the concepts and examples covered in the readings.
Each correct answer to the multiple-choice questions will receive 1 score. The final grade will be computed as the sum of the scores obtained in each question.
Course unit contents: During the course, the following topics will be addressed:
Psychology as science. The different methods of psychological investigation. The main schools of psychology. Sensation and perception. Attention. Conditioning and learning. Memory. Knowledge representation. Language. Communication. Thinking ad reasoning. Problem solving and creativity. Biases in judgment and decision making. Emotions. Intelligence measuring. Application areas of cognitive science.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course topics will be addressed during frontal lectures. In-class discussions on the proposed theoretical models of psychological processes will be stimulated.
