Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to teach how to design a sample survey on all stages. The student will learn both statistical notions and technical and transversal skills, through the design of a real survey.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the potential as well as the limitations of statistical surveys, in particular, of sample surveys.
2. Acquire or reinforce basic notions on:
- the survey management
- the design of electronic questionnaires
- the selection of statistical samples
3. Develop technical skills to:
- design a statistical survey using the more proper data collection methods;
- choose the proper type of survey formats (electronic vs. paper questionnaire, self-administered vs. interviewed administered survey);
- implement an electronic questionnaire for a computer-assisted data collection;
- select probabilistic samples and evaluate the appropriateness of non-probabilistic samples;
- determine the optimal sample size;
- plan and conduct a research project and a report describing research results, using a proper language
4. Develop sensibility, language and critical spirit on the data collection methods in the real world.
Examination methods: The examination is composed by three parts:
1. Written examination containing 4 or 5 open answer questions.
2. Written report, by a team up to 4 students, describing a survey project on a topic defined in accordance with the teacher.
3. Creation of an electronic questionnaire, by team of 3 students, starting from the work done during lessons.
Students not attending the lessons will be able to do the written report and the electronic questionnaire: for this aim, they can refer to the teacher to plan the work.
Assessment criteria: The final grade of the examination is obtained summing up:
- the grade obtained in the written examination (max 25/30),
- the evaluation obtained in the written report (max 4/30),
- the evaluation obtained for the creation of the electronic questionnaire (max 3/30).
Students obtaining the highest grade in all the tree parts of the examination will obtain 30 cum laude.
In case a student will not pass the 3 parts in a unique exam session, the positive evaluations (obtained in the written part or in the practical ones) continue to be valid for 12 months.
Students are not forced to take the practical parts of the examination (written report and electronic questionnaire): in this case, the evaluation will be based only on the grade obtained in the written examination.
Course unit contents: 1. Methodology of statistical survey
- The statistical survey for the social and economic research; the survey design.
- Data collection methods (face-to-face, telephone, web, diary survey); computer-assisted data collection.
- Questionnaire design
- Data quality analysis
- Writing a report
2. Methodology of statistical sampling
- Probabilistic sampling
- equal and unequal selection probabilities; random and systematic sampling; self-weighting samples; sampling from multiple or not complete lists.
- Simple random sampling: estimators; sampling error, properties of estimators.
- Stratified sampling: proportional allocation, optimal allocation, implicit stratification.
- Multi-phase sampling: sample with probability proportional to size, intraclass correlation, areas sampling
- Non probabilistic sampling
- Examples of complex sampling: the sampling of the Istat Labour Force survey and of other Istat surveys (EU-SILC, multipurpose surveys, ecc).
- The permanent Census of Population
- Qualitative surveys: focus groups, Delphi, privileged witnesses.
3. Methodology of electronic questionnaire
- Structure of the questionnaire through flow chart, questions wording, questions order and selection of the set of responses.
- Methodology of questionnaires design for computer-assisted surveys.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course develops from one side through theoretical lessons and from the other side through designing a statistical survey: after the presentation of each topic during the theoretical lessons, team works follow with the aim of developing a part of the survey (for example, the questionnaire, the data check, the sampling design, the report of results). Team works begin during lesson with the support by the teacher and conclude autonomously by students. For each topic, all team works are corrected and discussed to obtain a final version of the work that forms a part of the survey. Once the different parts of the survey are developed, students will work in computer laboratory to create the electronic questionnaire and the computer-assisted data check.
In addition, exercises and real problems will be proposed to be solved during lessons through team works and subsequent discussions. This methodology allows students to acquire theoretical knowledge to plan a statistical survey, but also to develop the connected technical computer and transversal skills (ability to work in team, to create report, to summarize, and problem solving).
