Prerequisites:
|
INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY, STATISTICS 2 |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
The course unit considers the basic methods and concepts of biodemographic studies, with a special focus on fertility and survival. Students will be provided with a general comprehension of population mortality and fertility laws, growth mechanisms and evolution of age structure. |
Examination methods:
|
A written test (3/4 exercises, two hours of time) is given to students. The questions in the test are aimed at evaluating the ability of analyzing and discussing demographic data. Students who received a grade greater or equal than 27/30 will undergo an oral test. |
Assessment criteria:
|
Students will be evaluated on the base of their comprehension of course unit topics and their ability to apply methods and concepts given during the unit |
Course unit contents:
|
1. Fertility [3 ECTS]
- Fertility measures, cohort and period perspective, tempo and quantum effects, Bongaarts aand Feeney method
- Biological and behavioral detrminats of fertility. Fecundity, sterility, fecundability; Estimate issues, Bongaarts model.
- Fertility law (Coale-McNeill, Peristera-Kostaki, Hadwiger).
2. Survival and mortality [4 ECTS]
-Base methods for mortality analysis: life table and its functions, cohort and period perspective, mortality indices. Extending the life table: disability free survival.
- Aspects of human mortality: health and epidemiological transition. Verticalization, horizontalization, longevity extension.
-Mortality laws: Empirical tables, Gompertz law and mathematical functions (Siler, Heligman-Pollard). Mortality forecasting.
- Studies on extreme longevity, Life table for extremely old ages
- Causes of death and methods for their analysis. Multi-decrements and cause specific tables
3. Populations evolution [2 ECTS]
- Measures and models of population growth (growth rates, logistic law)
- Age structure of a population and its evolution, Lotka equation. Stable and Stationary populations. Sex ratio at birth and at other ages. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
The course unit is made of lectures and computer labs. Computer labs are aimed at giving a greater comprehension of mechanisms behind reproductive and survival processes of a population |
