Syllabus
Prerequisites: To have passed the exam of "Fondamenti di Biologia".
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the main morphological, cytological, reproductive and metabolic characteristics of uni- and oligocellular organisms belonging to the Protozoa. Phylogentic problems and organization of the main phyla of Protozoa. Knowledge of the phylogenetic position, adaptive radiation, and morpho-physiological organization in the different phyla of Invertebrates Metazoa, at cellular and organismic levels. Knowledge of life-cycles, feeding habits and reproduction ways.
Examination methods: The exam includes a written and an oral part. The former consists in the identification, classification and description of micro- and macroscopic specimens; the overcoming of this part is the necessary condition to go on in the examination. In the oral part, the topics treated during the course will be discussed.
Assessment criteria: The primary and essential condition for the overcoming of the exam is the ability of identification, i.e. ability of classification in the main taxa protozoa and invertebrate metazoa, after observation of live and fixed micro- and macroscopical specimens. The identification of phylogenetic relationships among organisms and description of life-cycles in the most prominent taxa.
Course unit contents: Protozoa: cells as organisms. Origin of unicellular eukaryotic organisms. The problem of Protista taxon. Organization of the main phyla of the Protozoa. Metabolism, cycles, reproduction and sex phenomena, adaptation to the environments.
Cycles of the main parasitic protozoa, especially the pathogens for humans.
Phylogenetic relationships between some groups of Protozoa and Metazoa.
The course offers a synthesis of structural and organizational patterns in the Invertebrate Metazoa.
Animal bauplan. Symmetry. The different types of cleavage in the Invertebrates. Germ layers and body cavities.
Protostomia and Deuterostomia. Metamerism. Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa.
Classification criteria, general characteristics and systematics of the following phyla: Porifera, Cnidaria, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Nemertea, Rotifera, Gastrotricha, Ectoprocta, Brachiopoda, Phoronida, Mollusca, Annelida, Nematoda, Onychophora, Tardigrada, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, Emichordata, Chordata. Outlines about Placozoa e “Mesozoa”.
The organisation and the differentiation of systems for locomotion and support, excretion and osmoregulation, circulation and gaaseous exchanges, reproduction, nervous transmission and sense organs, will be considered in the various metazoan phyla from a comparative and an evolutionary point of view

Environment adaptations and adaptive radiations.
Phylogenetic relationships among the main metazoan phyla.
The laboratory part of the course allow a direct insight in the course content through the observation of living animals, fixed macroscopic and microscopic samples, models, videoclips. The structural body plans of the main metazoan phyla will be examined; part of the laboratory didactics will be devoted to the dissections of earthworms, cuttlefish, mantis shrimp.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The various topics of the course of Zoology are presented with lectures in power-point, which illustrate in details the morphology of the organisms related to the functions. Files are available for the students in internet.
Some impressive DVD are also shown for the presentation of the main taxa. The observation of live and fixed (both microscopical and macroscopical ones) specimens.
The course (12 CFU) consists in 80 h of lectures and 32 h of laboratory.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Some texbooks of Protozoology and Zoology at different levels of complexity are advised and one Guide for laboratory. The use of some dycotomic keys is also recommended to identify the organisms from the morphological traits.
