Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic concepts of petrology and mineralogy
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire information about some of the major topics of Earth Sciences: environmental geochemistry, paleoclimatology, origin of the elements and nucleosynthesis, origin of magmas and evolution of the Earth, evolution of the atmosphere and hydrosphere.
Examination methods: The exam will be written (except for student specifically asking for an oral exam). The laboratory work will be described in a written report.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation of the theoretical and practical aspects.
Course unit contents: 1- Basics of thermodynamics.
2- Origin of the elements, nucleosynthesis, and cosmochemistry.
3- Geochemistry of oceans: densisty, salinity, temperature. Major and nutrient elements. Currents.
4- Trace elements, definition and systematics. Application to the origin of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Diffusion.
5- Radiogenic isotope geochemistry: nuclear decay, geochronology, tracing igneous and Earth evolution processes.
6- Stable isotopes, equilibrium and disequilibrium isotope fractionation, depende on temperature and biologic processes, paleoclimatology and climate changes.
7- Volcanoes and climate change.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Class-room teaching.
Laboratories: computer-based modelling of geochemical processes. Specific case studies, excercises.
