Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of the basics of Zoology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Target skills and knowledge: For Ecology (BIO/07, 6 credits, second semester).
The students, following this part of the course, will:
- Obtain a general knowledge of the main arguments studied in Ecology at the individual, population, community and ecosystem level.
- Know the theorethical background and the main methods of ecological studies.
- Earn an holistic view of the ecosystem level processes and of the anthropic impacts and habitat degradation.

For Legislazione Ambientale (IUS/14)
A student who has met the objective of the course will be able:
- To analyze the main theoretical and methodological issues related to the processes leading to the construction of environmental citizenship rules in their different types (mandatory standards, agreements among parties, voluntary policies)
- To know the main tools for inclusive decision-making processes and the management of environmental conflicts
- To adopt an international comparative approach addressing the role of multilevel environmental governance in the construction of sustainable decisions in the management of natural resources
Examination methods: For Ecology (BIO/07):
Written, with multiple choice and open questions.

For Legislazione ambientale (IUS 14):
Working group report and written examination.
Assessment criteria: The student is asked to demonstrate to comprehension of the arguments of the course and capacity to present them in an appropriate way.

In addition, for Legislazione Ambientale (IUS/14), the student is required to show:
- Knowledge of main tools related to environmental policies
- Knowledge and use of facilitation tools for inclusive decision-making
- Ability to frame the multilevel environmental governance
Course unit contents: For Ecology (BIO/07)
After a general introduction to the relevant aspects of the physical environment, the course will deal with the ecology of individuals, populations, community and ecosystems.
- Introduction to Ecology. The nature of Ecology. The aquatic environment. The terrestrial environment. Plant Adaptations to the Environment. Animal Adaptations to the Environment.
- Population Ecology. Lyfe cycles. Structure and dynamics of populations. Models of exponential and logistic growth. Models of geometric growth. Stochastic processes and extinction risk. Metapopulations.
- Ecological interactions. Predation. Competition. Other interactions.
- Community Ecology. Methods. Structure and diversity. Top down and bottom up control. Community dynamics. Ecological successions.
- Ecosystem ecology. Concepts. Structure of the ecosystem. Ecosystem energetics. Biogeochemical cycles.

For Legislazione ambientale (IUS/14)
- Policies of the earth and environmental discourses: the contexts of environmental law
- The evolution of the international debate on environment and development: From Stockholm 1972 to Rio +20
- Green and brown agendas for environmental policies, comparing the environmental indicators in different regions of the world
- 50 years of environmental policies in Europe: the construction of a legal framework and innovative practices
- From sustainable development to the prevention of environmental damage: Legislative Decree of 3 April 2006, n. 152 "Environmental Regulations"
- Local authorities beyond environmental law: key actors of sustainable development
- Environmental assessments from project to plan (EIA and SEA); bodiversity and impact assessment
- IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention control)
- Voluntary instruments: Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001 and EMAS) and environmental certification of product (EPD and Ecolabel), the Green Public Procurement
- Environmental Citizenship: principle 10 of the Rio Declaration, the Aarhus Convention
- The actors of environmental policies: international organizations, the European Union and other regional organizations, States, local governments, agencies, NGOs and civil society, farmers, children and youth, women, business, consumers, minorities and indigenous peoples, the scientific community
- The challenge of multilevel environmental governance: inclusiveness, transparency, accountability
- Informed consent: indigenous peoples and minorities in socio and environmental issues
- Methodology and tools for participation and conflict management

In addition to attend to classes, the student is asked to participate to laboratories/excursions in the field.

The course activity is organized in frontal lessons, group works, study cases, role play
Additional notes about suggested reading: Other materials will be presented during the course considering also the language ability of the students.
A e-learning platform based on Moodle software will be prepared. Student should register at the beginning of the course.
