Prerequisites: The student is expected to have skills and knowledge of Petrography, petrology and geology. In particular concerning the rheology of the magmas, magma forming processes and geodynamic setting of magma formation.
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides basic knowledge of descriptive and genetic processes of Earth’s evolution and provides competences for application and planning of use of strategic natural resources.
Examination methods: Oral exam.
Assessment criteria: Competences of the main topics, organic answers, use of proper vocabulary, quality of talk.
Course unit contents: Treated topics:
- main concepts of magma forming processes and of magma sources, upraise and emplacement of melts;
- chemical, macro- and microscopic, structural characteristics of volcanic products (gas, lava, ejecta);
- classification of the main volcanic activities;
- shape and structure of volcanic edifices as a function of the rheological characteristics of magmas;
- dynamics and mechanisms of the main type of effusive and explosive volcanic activities, lava flows, Strombolian, Hawaiian, Vulcanian, Plinian eruptions;
Main types of vulcaanic deposits: lava flows, fall and flow deposits;
- volcanism and plate tectonics;
vulcanism and climate;
- volcanism of the italian regions (Vico, Cimino, M.ti Sabatini, Colli Laziali, Somma-Vesuvio, Campi Flegrei, Eolie, Etna, Provincia Vulcanica Veneta);
- applied aspects of products of the volcanic activity;
- volcanic risk, surveillance, and forecast of volcanic eruptions;
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is organized in two parts. During the first period, classes will treat theoretical aspects and will be provided by power-point slides; the second part is a field-work in active volcanic areas (Campi Flegrei, Stromboli, Vulcano) where the theoretical competences will be used to study on site morphologies of volcanic edifices and of volcanic products. The field-work is completed by visiting volcano monitoring centers on active volcanic areas.
Additional notes about suggested reading: All power-point slides will be uploaded on the Moodle portal of the Biology Department and will be accessible before onset of classes so that the student can integrate it with his own notes.
