Syllabus
Prerequisites: Adequate knowledge of phisical, organic and inorganic chemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the student with an adequate level of knowledge of the main processes of industrial chemistry.
The student after the theoretical and practical course will have an overview of the main industrial processes, of the process variables, of the reaction mechanisms, system diagrams and uses.
Examination methods: The final exam takes into account results concerning theoretical part (oral exam), written examination on the mass balances and the results of laboratory exposed in a brief report. The final grade will be calculated, based on credit, by the formula:
[GRADEth + (3/4GRADElab + 1/4GRADEex)]x1/2.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria will be based on the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired and the ability to explain.
Course unit contents: Catalysis and industrial catalysts.
Syngas from coal.
Production of the mixture N2 + 3H2: hydrodesulfurization of methane, steam reforming, secondary reforming, shift reactions and methanation.
Ammonia synthesis.
Nitric acid synthesis.
Urea synthesis.
Sulphur industry: production of sulfur, Claus process, sulfuric acid and oleum.
Hydrochloric acid: industrial production.
Methanol synthesis.
Hydrogen peroxide: antraquinone process.
Oxo Synthesis: cobalt and rhodium processes.
Acetic acid: carbonylation of methanol.
Practical activity. Preparation, characterization and properties of zeolites A and X. Application of a zeolite as catalyst in the dehydration of an alcohol in a flow reactor. Preparation of Pd/C and its use in the hydrogenation of cinnamic acid via hydrogen transfer (catalysis in a reactor). Building materials: lime, cement and additives. Ion exchange resins: determination of some physical and chemical properties; transformation time of CrCl3.6H2O in [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3. Determination of CaCl2 in a water sample.
Calculations. Material balance in steady state.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The specific preparation will be obtained through a wide educational path which include lectures supported by video projections, short videos, exercises about mass balances, pratical laboratory and tecnical visit to companies in order to put the student in touch with the reality of an industrial process.
