Syllabus
Prerequisites: Mathematics, General physics 1, General and inorganic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the students with the fundamental basis and methods of classical thermodynamics. At the end of the course the student should be able to apply the concepts taught, to solve physicochemical problems
Examination methods: The examination will be composed of a written and an oral test. In the written exam the student will solve some exercises on chemical thermodynamics. This written examination may also be replaced by partial tests taken during the semester. Only students successfully passing the written examination will be admitted to the oral examination. The final exam score will take into consideration the results of the partial tests taken during the semester (or the final written test) and the oral examination.
Assessment criteria: The student’s preparation will be judged on the basis of the comprehension of the concepts taught and from the capability of the student to apply the thermodynamic methods to the solution of chemical problems.
Course unit contents: 1) State functions and variables.
2) Principles of thermodynamics.
3) Thermodynamic potentials, differentials and state functions.
4) Thermodynamic properties of pure substances
4) Phase equilibria in pure substances.
5) Thermodynamic properties of multi-component systems.
6) Dilute solutions and colligative properties.
7) Ionic solutions.
8) Thermodynamics of Galvanic cells.
9) Macroscopic description of chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lectures using overhead projectors or blackboard. Hands-on participation of the students during problem-solving will be encouraged.
Additional notes about suggested reading: All teaching materials, including exercises and sample tests, will be made available to the students.
