Syllabus
Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: Essential knowledge of the modern chemical industry: sources of chemicals, environmental impact of chemical industrial production, problems connected with large-scale productions.
Basic knowledge of the production and characterization of polymeric materials.
Understanding workplace dynamics. Writing an effective CV. Knowledge of some local industries.
Examination methods: Written test with about ten open questions and five closed questions (two points each).
The final grade will be the total grade obtained divided by 100 and multiplied by 30.
Assessment criteria: The acquisition of the knowledge and of the abilities relative to the content described below will be evaluated.
Course unit contents: History and development of the chemical industry. Sustainable development. Green Chemistry. Health and safety in industry. Product categories (scale of production). Chemical companies (organization, marketing). Economic issues (cost determination). Research and Development. Patent issues.
Raw materials and energy resources in the lithosphere and biosphere and their most important transformations. Non-renewable resources. Introduction to petrochemistry. Polymers: sources of the most common monomers; classification of polymers; mechanisms of polymerization; constitution, configuration and conformation; molecular weight: definition and methods of measurement; description of the most common polymers and of their characteristics; crystallization; glass transition; mechanical properties.
Ammonia synthesis. Renewable resources. Catalysis and industrial catalysts. Industrial reactors. Unit operations (outline). Process control. Scale-up: pilot plants, industrial plants.
Speakers from local industries will participate.
