Prerequisites: In addition to Organic Chemistry I and II, basic knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics are required
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides the basic knowledge on the structure and function of the molecules(especially proteins and nucleic acids) involved in biological processes, and gives general information on the organization of metabolic reactions within the cell.
Examination methods: The exam will consist of a written test to be held in two hours. Twenty questions will be asked about the program. Some of these will be open questions, others with multiple choice. Enzymatic kinetic exercises with numerical calculation will also be considered.
Assessment criteria: The acquisition of the general properties of biological chemistry and the ability to apply and use the knowledge, provided by the course, in the resolution of specific problems, will be evaluated
Course unit contents: General organization of the cell. Eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Nucleotides and nucleic acids. DNA, RNA. The genetic code. Proteins an their primary, secondary and tertiary structure. Globular and fibrous proteins. Outline of techniques for protein purification. Reasons that determine the stability of the three-dimensional structure and denaturation. Examples of three-dimensional structures of proteins. Cooperativity and allostery. Oxygen transport: myoglobin and hemoglobin; Hill's plot; MWC model; structural elemenets; Bohr effect; sickle cell anemia. Examples of structure-function relationship: (1)protease (2)antibodies. Enzymes. Michaelis-Menten kinetics; competitive and non-competitive inhibitors. Allosteric enzymes: control and activation. Lipids. Biological membranes. Polysaccharides. Bioenergetics. The flow of energy in living organisms; The compounds rich in energy; the significance of the energy metabolic pathways; biological oxidation reactions; photosynthesis; oxidative phosphorylation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and classroom exercises on specific topics supported by use of slides.
