Prerequisites: In order to efficiently attend the course the student should possess knowledge acquired from the base teaching of mathematic, statistic, physics, general and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry and biology, general microbiology. It is also required to be familiar with English language and internet utilization
Target skills and knowledge: As a consequence of this course the student will be familiar with several microbial groups of agri-food and veterinary interest, he will be able to propose specific strategies for searching, selecting, typing and genetically modifying microorganisms for possible significant applications in production chains. The student will be also able to perform lab methods for diagnoses of zoonotic microorganisms.
Examination methods: Generally, oral examination. At the end of the course a written test, limited to students of the current year, will be available, possibly integrated by an oral test.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student is based on checking the level of understanding of the themes covered by the teacher and on the ability to make use of microbial biotechnology knowledge in view of some significant agro-environmental and agro-food applications, and on diagnostic tests applied to microorganisms of veterinary interest.
Course unit contents: 1° CFU: Search, isolation and selection of microorganisms for the agro-food production chains.
2° CFU: Identification of strategies aimed at obtaining suitable microorganisms for direct use in food production and transformation systems.
3° CFU: Genetic modification aimed at practical microbiological applications within the agri-food production chains.
4° CFU: Case studies (studies and/or researches and/or achievements for agro-food industry).
5° CFU: Ecology of pathogens in animal populations and natural ways of transmission and maintenance of microorganisms relevant to veterinary and public health .
6° CFU: Critical evaluation of classical and molecular microbiological assays and molecular epidemiology methods for the diagnosis and study of microorganisms of veterinay interest.
7° CFU: Case-study resolutions for the diagnosis of veterinay interest infections.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is organized in room lectures with the help of slides that will be made available to the students. In order to acquire basic biotechnological assays 32 h of lab practices will be carried out on molecular microbiological methods.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The slides used by the teacher will be made available to the student and some additional bibliographic material and links will be suggested. All the information and materials related to the course, and possibly more specific material will be also available on the University on-line platform Moodle.
