Syllabus

Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Prerequisites: Basic concepts of Physics, General and Organic Chemistry.
Elements of Chemical Thermodynamics,Kinetics and Electrochemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the essential molecules to the chemistry of living organisms.
Comprehension of the fundamental mechanisms at the basis of cellular function.
Knowledge of the metabolic pathways and their regulation
Learning of some biochemistry techniques.
Examination methods: Written examination with both multiple choice and open questions on the topics discussed in the classroom.
Assessment criteria: The overall knowledge about the topics of Biochemistry 1 and 2 will be evaluated, considering positive the examinations which show an adequate assimilation of the topics necessary to the later classes.
Appropriate terminology and synthesis ability will be also considered for the evaluation.

Specific characteristics of the Module

Course unit contents: Subject of the lessons:

1. Concepts of metabolism: chemical kinetics, enzymes, biological oxidations
2. Glycolysis
3. Krebs cycle
4. Gluconeogenesis and Glycogenolysis
5. Oxidative phosphorylation
6. Absorption and catabolism of lipids
7. Lipogenesis and sterol biosynthesis
8. Metabolism of amino acids
9. Nucleic acid metabolism
10. Integration of metabolism in diet and fasting

Laboratory session:

Techniques of protein separation (SDS-PAGE) and western blot analysis on whole cell extracts from Escherichia coli
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course includes both lectures and practical sessions. The contents of the lessons are described by showing powerpoint files to the students; in the practical sessions, students are divided in groups of three persons (max four), in order to allow an active contribution to all the experiments planned by the teacher. These laboratory experiences are introduced by a lesson in which the experimental approach is described in terms of theory and procedures and of potential biotechnological applications; in a further lesson the results obtained by the different groups are shown and discussed/compared.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Slides and files containing description/protocols of laboratory sessions are provided by the teacher by a daily loading on the Moodle platform.
